Most “Young” α-rich Stars Have High Masses but are Actually Old

چکیده

Recent observations have revealed a population of $\alpha$-element abundances enhanced giant stars with unexpected high masses ($\gtrsim$1 $M_\odot$) from asteroseismic analysis and spectroscopy. Assuming single-star evolution, their imply young ages ($\tau<6$Gyr) incompatible the canonical Galactic chemical evolution scenario. Here we study chemistry kinematics large sample such $\alpha$-rich, high-mass red branch (RGB) drawn LAMOST spectroscopic surveys. Using Gaia, found these share same as high-$\alpha$ old stellar in thick disk. The show that massive $\alpha$- iron-peak element similar to those disk stars. However, portion them exhibit higher [(N+C)/Fe] [Ba/Fe] ratios, which implies they gained C- Ba-rich materials extra sources, presumably asymptotic (AGB) companions. results support previous suggestion RGB are products binary evolution. Their thus mimic "young" single stars, yet fact belong an intrinsic population. To fully explain abundance patterns our variety channels, as, main-sequence (MS) + RGB, MS AGB, required, pointing diverse formation mechanisms seemly rejuvenated cannibals. With this larger sample, confirm earlier findings most, if not all, $\alpha$-rich seem be old.

Why Most Bright Stars are Binary But Most Dim Stars Are Single: A Simple Qualitative Explanation

It is known that most visible stars are binary: they have a nearby companion star, and these two stars orbit around each other. Based on this fact, until recently, astronomers believed that, in general, most stars are binary. A few years ago, a surprising paper showed that while most bright stars are indeed binary, most dim stars are single. In this paper, we provide a simple qualitative explan...

Dynamical Masses of Young Stars in Multiple Systems

We present recent measurements of the orbital motion in the young binaries DF Tau and ZZ Tau, and the hierarchical triple Elias 12, that were obtained with the Fine Guidance Sensors on the HST and at the Keck Observatory using adaptive optics. Combining these observations with previous measurements from the literature, we compute preliminary orbital parameters for DF Tau and ZZ Tau. We find tha...

Wind/disk Connection in Young Stars of Intermediate Masses

The AMBER instrument installed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) combines three beams from as many telescopes to produce spectrally dispersed fringes with milli-arcsecond angular scales in the near infrared. Two years after installation, first scientific observations have been carried out during the Science Demonstration Time and the Guaranteed Time mostly on bright sources due to some VLTI lim...

Circumstellar disks of the most vigorously accreting young stars.

Stars may not accumulate their mass steadily, as was previously thought, but in a series of violent events manifesting themselves as sharp stellar brightening. These events can be caused by fragmentation due to gravitational instabilities in massive gaseous disks surrounding young stars, followed by migration of dense gaseous clumps onto the star. Our high-resolution near-infrared imaging has v...

Stellar Multiplicity and the Imf: Most Stars Are Single Born

In this short communication I compare recent findings suggesting a low binary star fraction for late type stars with knowledge concerning the forms of the stellar initial and present day mass functions for masses down to the hydrogen burning limit. This comparison indicates that most stellar systems formed in the galaxy are likely single and not binary as has been often asserted. Indeed, in the...
